'I thought that Duric was going to make our centerbacks sleep with the lights on tonight' - Hong Kong coach Ernest Merrick on Aleksandar Duric

“First half, we controlled the game," said Raddy Avramovic after Singapore's 2-0 win over Hong Kong.

"Generally, we could have scored a few more goals but nevertheless, I am happy with this result. But there are still things that we can improve on but that could only happen if we have more game and proper preparations.”

Avramovice also praised the three debutants and felt that two of them were not playing their normal game as it was their first match for the Lions.

“The new players did well especially Jufri Taha and I took him out not because he is not playing well but I had wanted to give other players a chance such as Nazrul Nazari and Shafiq Ghani," said the Singapore coach.

“Nazrul and Shafiq looked pressured in the game but that is normal as it’s their first senior game for Singapore.”

It has been months since Singapore saw good attacking football from the players and Raddy acknowledged this as he credited his players for their performance and made known his reason for playing Duric for most parts of the game.

“I feel that we played more good passing football and also good combination in attacks. The best combination for the night was when Qiu Li crossed the ball over to Khairul Nizam but unfortunately the final touch was not there.

“I was planning to change Duric during half time but seeing how the game was going, I changed my mind and kept him in the team because he is the only one that was able to keep possession in the opponent's half and that is very important in football.”

Hong Kong coach Ernest Merrick agreed that his team was outplayed by their opponents and gave special mentions to several Singapore players.

“Singapore’s defence is very solid and I am impressed with Mustafic Fahrudin," said Merrick.

"Mustafic caused us a lot of problems in Hong Kong and he did it again today. He is not the sharpest or the fittest on the pitch but he's got a footballing brain.

“Singapore was sharper to the ball, they were more competitive than we were and I thought that Duric was going to make our centerbacks sleep with the lights on tonight.

“Aleksandar Duric made life difficult for our defence in the first half and it’s great to see someone of his age doing so well in the game.”
