AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa was present at the inauguration of the National Training Centre of Cambodia (NTC) on Tuesday, having pledged yesterday to fully support the initiatives of the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) and provide the necessary technical expertise in developing Cambodia’s football scene.
The NTC, a Fifa Goal Project-funded facility, represents a step forward for football in Cambodia, and AFC’s support will definitely be a massive aid to football development in the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the AFC President was optimistic about the project, which marks the start of a new era for Cambodian football.
“I believe the beginning of this project also signals the start of a new era for Cambodian football and will boost the federation’s efforts to develop grassroots and youth football,” said Shaikh Salman reassuringly.
The inauguration ceremony was also graced by a number of dignitaries including the Prime Minister of Cambodia HE Hun Sen, the ASEAN Football Federation President HM Sultan Ahmad Shah, AFC Vice-President HRH Prince Abdullah Ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah, Fifa Executive Committee member Worawi Makudi and FFC President General Sao Sokha.
The Bahraini royalty, who is also a Fifa Executive Committee member, spoke about how Cambodia has benefitted from Fifa’s various developmental initiatives. He explained that by working closely with Fifa and the AFC, the country will continue to progress both on and off the pitch.
Shaik Salman also paid tribute to the senior officials who are leading the way in taking Cambodian football forward.
“I would like to place on record my sincere appreciation to the Football Federation of Cambodia President, General Sao Sokha who played a key role in purchasing the 15-hectare land for this National Training Centre and is spearheading the development of football in Cambodia," he said.
“I would also like to thank the Prime Minister of Cambodia, His Excellency, Hun Sen and his government for supporting football because without their assistance it would not have been possible for FIFA, the AFC or the FFC to build a training centre of this magnitude."
Concluding his address, Shaik Salman encouragingly reiterated the AFC and Fifa's support for Cambodian football.
“I would like to assure you that FIFA and AFC are committed to support the Football Federation of Cambodia in their efforts to take the Cambodian football to a higher level," he asserted.
