Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao fined P100,000, suspended one game for profanities

PBA Commissioner Chito Salud slapped a hefty penalty on Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao stemming from the tactician’s back to back ejections in their semifinals series against the Petron Blaze Boosters in the 2014 PLDT myDSL Philippine Cup.

Guiao was summoned by Salud for a meeting followed by the PBA Office releasing the decision.

“Following this morning’s meeting with Coach Yeng Guiao regarding his use of a dirty finger pointed toward the commissioner’s and tech committee table, this Office hereby metes out on Coach Guiao the penalty of one (1) game suspension and a fine of one hundred thousand pesos (Php 100,000.00) for persistent conduct unbecoming of a Coach exhibited in a manner positively indicating disrespect, if not disdain or scorn, for the league as an institution and its fans,” the statement read.

“I would like to state unequivocally that this disciplinary sanction cannot fully convey the sense of regret of this Office for the insulting and unsavory antics Coach Guiao continues to display and foist on the players, the referees, his peers and the entire viewing public of the PBA, especially the youth, despite repeated well-meaning advice and counsel from this Office in the past,” Salud added. “I invite him to reflect upon his responsibility to the public, the league and the Rain or Shine organization which he represents, even as I reiterate that the PBA will fulfill its own responsibility to tirelessly uphold the principles of decency and sportsmanship.”

In Game 3 of the series, Guiao was ejected after flashing the dirty finger on his godson Arwind Santos who showboated in front of the Rain or Shine with Petron holding a big lead in the game.

In Game 4, Guiao was once again ejected in the third quarter after he was whistled for his second technical foul. At the 6:15 mark of that period, Petron's Ronald Tubid was whistled for a foul. The referee called a technical foul on Guiao for profanities aimed at the Booster. He also flashed a dirty finger as he walked into the dugout. Guiao also did not help his case by lashing out at the officials after their win.

"We really did not beat Petron. We beat the referees,” he said in the post-game press conference. “I don’t know why they can get away with those and we cannot get away with the touch fouls,” Guiao said. “Swerte lang talaga kami. Gusto lang siguro ng Diyos na makarating kami sa ganito.”

As a result, Guiao will now be absent for Game 5 of the series where his Elasto Painters could end the semifinals series to book a return trip to the Philippine Cup Finals. Last year, Rain or Shine also qualified for the championship but they were swept by the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters.
