Olympic surge lifts Channel Tunnel traffic to record high

Traffic through the tunnel between Britain and France hit a record high as visitors flocked to London for the Olympics and holiday-hungry Britons headed in the opposite direction.

A total of 15,152 cars boarded the rail shuttle under the English Channel on Saturday, August 11, the highest total for a single day since the tunnel opened for business in 1994, Eurotunnel said Wednesday.

The week starting August 6 was the tunnel's busiest since 1999, when the impending abolition of duty free sales of alcohol and tobacco sent thousands of British consumers to the continent to stock up.

Traffic over the full two and a half weeks of the Olympics was up 16 percent compared with the same period last year.
