I-League 2017: Aizawl FC 1-1 Bengaluru FC - Sunil Chhetri avoids defeat for the Blues

Sunil Chhetri's equaliser (45') salvaged a point for Bengaluru FC after Brandon Vanlalremdika (40') had given Aizawl FC the lead in a Round 9 clash of the I-League at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium in Aizawl, Mizoram, on Wednesday.

Khalid Jamil made two changes as Lalruatthara and Mahmoud Al Amna made it back to the first eleven of the home side while Albert Roca dropped CK Vineeth to the bench and started Daniel Lalhlimpuia instead.

It was Daniel who whipped in a good cross in the opening minutes but there were no Bengaluru players in the box to capitalise on the same before it was Aizawl on the counter through Stephan Kamo following a lovely through ball from Alfred Jaryan only to see himself in an offside position.

Soon after, Kamo miscontrolled another opportunity and his team-mate, Ashutosh Mehta, too had a feeble shot from Al Amna's pass that didn't bother Amrinder Singh in the Bengaluru goal.

Around the half-hour mark Al Amna's header at the edge of the box rattled the bar, and with the rival defence unable to clear the danger, Jaryan's powerful shot had to be kept out by Amrinder.

Sunil Chhetri got into the act for the away side as he beat Lalramchullova, but his shot was inches wide, a minute before Vanlalremdika slotted home Mehta's cross in a move started by Kamo's penetrating pass to the winger.

However, at the stroke of half-time, the Blues' skipper, Chhetri blasted the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box leaving Aizawl goalkeeper Albino Gomes no chance to get to it as it was an absolute belter of an effort.

In the second half, Harmanjot Khabra's cross saw Gomes pull off a save from Chhetri's header in the 51st minute.

Referee Rowan Arumughan did not hesitate as he pointed to the spot in the 54th minute after he deemed Lalruatthara guilty of fouling Sandesh Jhingan inside the box. Chhetri stepped up only to see his penalty saved by Albino Gomes.

The referee continued to have a tough day at office as he cancelled Sandesh Jhingan's goal from Cameron Watson's corner, owing what he deemed as a foul on Gomes much to the chagrin of the Bengaluru faithful.

Kamo headed wide in the 79th minute after a good combination play between Jayesh Rane and Lalruatthara, but Jamil's side seemed content with the point even though Zotea headed wide Chullova's free-kick during injury time.

The draw sees Aizawl FC remain third on the table with 17 points from 9 matches while Bengaluru FC ascend to fourth on the table with 12 points, having played a match less.
