Fifa president Sepp Blatter congratulates Palestine on United Nations membership

Fifa president Sepp Blatter on Saturday congratulated the Palestine Football Essociation [FA] after the United Nations [UN] general assembly acceptance of Palestine as a non-member observer state.

The FIFA president sent a message to Palestine FA head Jibril Al Rajoub to express his heart-felt wishes.

"I'm happy to hear these news from New York, please send my congratulations to Palestinian presdient Mahmoud Abbas," read the message which was published by the Palestine FA.

UN members voted 138-9 to recognise Palestine as a sovereign state, earning the praise of Blatter who believed this as a way of moving forward, and is similar to Fifa’s stance of recognising Palestine as a football developing country on its own 15 years ago.

"I see the world community are emulating our steps in this issue," his statement continued.

Blatter’s message came after Israel's recent air strikes caused heavy damage to the Stadium of Palestine in Gazza, leaving several craters on the playing surface and destroying the indoor hall. Repairs are set to cost several million dollars, and the pitch will be out of order for at least four weeks.

Palestine are currently ranked 148th by Fifa, and completed their best continental showing this summer with a fourth-place finish in the AFC Challenge Cup.
