Chang: I really want to win Foreign Player of the Year

The race for Goal Singapore’s Foreign Player of the Year is heating up, with Woodlands Wellington striker Chang Jo Yoon declaring his desire to win the coveted award.

With 13 goals and 13 assists to his name this season, Chang was naturally selected as one of the six nominees for Foreign Player of the Year in the first ever Goal Singapore Football Awards.

And it is an award that the 25-year-old Korean is desperate to win.

“I didn't expect this at all,” Chang told Goal Singapore.

“I'm so happy and it's an honour (to be nominated), even though honestly I would not be expected to win this.

“[But] I would really want to win.”

Chang is nominated alongside Geylang International's Jozef Kaplan, Tanjong Pagar United’s Monsef Zerka, Balestier Khalsa’s Paul Cunningham, Home United’s Sirina Camara and compatriot Lee Kwan Woo, who Chang admits is his idol.

“I’m so honored to be nominated for this with my idol Lee Kwan Woo,” he said of the Home star midfielder.

“[But] I need to [express my] thanks to Woodlands. I am so happy to be in the club this season.

“The 2012 season was my worst season ever, but in 2013 season I turned it into the best."

Despite a significant return of goals and assists for the season, Chang was not fully satisfied with his performances, as he would have liked to finish the season as top scorer. Still, he did help teammate and strike partner Moon Soon Ho score 15 goals and land the S.League Golden Boot.

“I am not fully satisfied with my performance this season, but I have no regrets because I did my best,” Chang said.

“And I want to improve my performances next season. Another great season is expected, I think.”

The Foreign Player of the Year award is part of the 2013 Goal Singapore Football awards, the first annual-inclusive football awards in Singapore where the best in Singapore football talents are recognised for their contributions and achievements of this past year.

Chang was leading the voting charts since the poll started on November 17 but has been usurped by Balestier's Paul Cunningham from late Tuesday night. Polls close December 1, 11.59p.m.
