Ahead of England's World Cup campaign in Brazil this June, captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that he would not welcome the "wives and girlfriends" (WAGs) circus to town.

Although manager Roy Hodgson has allowed his players' spouses to join the 23-man squad at their base, the Liverpool star has claimed they are big distractions.

Instead, he prefers his wife of nearly seven years, Alex Curran, 31, and two daughters to stay home in England during the showpiece tournament.

"I thought it was bit of a distraction, so in 2010 when I set off for the World Cup in South Africa I preferred for my family to be away from me and I could focus on trying to get my form right. So I will be doing the same again in Brazil," said Gerrard, 33, in an interview.

His wife Curran (seen below with Gerrard, when he was awarded an honorary fellowship from Liverpool's John Moores university) is a model and fashion columnist. She is a notable part of England's WAG group, also made up of Coleen Rooney and formerly

  • Manchester United's Japanese star Shinji Kagawa celebrated his birthday in bizarre fashion on Monday.

Despite United's humiliating 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, the midfielder was determined not to let it ruin his mood.

Kagawa posed in a series of funny photos to commemorate turning 25 at his home in Manchester.

One odd picture sees him posing with his birthday cake while flanked by two unidentified friends wearing masks of his face.

These masks are typically worn by devoted fans of Kagawa in the stands at Old Trafford, who want to show their support for him.

His cake featured a quirky model of him in his United kit, and was emblazoned with the club and Japanese Football Association badges.

Kagawa was an unused substitute in United's dismal defeat by Liverpool, which saw more pressure being piled on club coach David Moyes.

It hasn't been the most enjoyable season for Kagawa, with him left out of regular first team action. Moyes prefers the likes of Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and

  • Manchester United’s
players are giving away their match-worn socks to help in efforts to rebuild devastated regions of Japan after the earthquake and tsunami of three years ago.

Some may find it tasteless, but this really is a rather innovative campaign: the used socks will be used to make "Onukun" dolls for residents who lost their homes in Tohoku, the eastern region of Japan that was ravaged by the natural disasters.

United's Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa, left-back Alex Buttner and defender Phil Jones are the face -- and socks -- of this goodwill programme.

Chelsea's Brazilian midfielder Oscar also has a passion for social work and helping the needy.

When he married his wife Ludmila in December 2011, the couple asked their wedding guests to bring food and toys to the ceremony instead of gifts. They then donated what they had collected to charities in America.

Oscar, meanwhile, has much to look forward to this year, both on and off the pitch.

  • Former Man United boss and club legend, Sir Alex Ferguson, was spotted at the prestigious Oscars ceremony with his wife, Lady Cathy.

When he stepped down after 27 years in charge of champions United, Ferguson revealed he had his own "bucket list" of things he hoped to achieve.

One of them was a trip to what is also known as the Academy Awards.

"I'm retired and I've got time on my hands now," Ferguson told British journalists on the red carpet. "I spoke to my lawyer and he said, 'you must go to the Oscars sometime', so I got this opportunity."

Interestingly, the self-declared "film buff" had one of the best seats in the house where he revealed he had even given a pep talk to Best Supporting Actress winner, Lupita Nyong’o, before she collected the prize for her role in 12 Years A Slave.

"I was in Row E, so it was good. I had a good seat. I've seen most of the stars but didn’t speak to any of them. I spoke to some the night before at a party in Beverley Hills. I was chatting to Lupita

  • Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge is enjoying a great spell in his professional career for the Premiership side.

The England ace has been earning critical praise for his fiery form after netting 18 goals in 19 matches. Sturridge, 24, is also the first player since Ray Kennedy in 1974 to score three goals in his first three games for the Reds.

Now, he also has much to be happy about in his personal life, after it was revealed that he has been dating Jourdan Dunn, a 23-year-old British model whom he first met in August last year at a music festival.

Dunn won "Model of the Year" last November at the Harper's Bazaar Women Of The Year Awards, and is also the first black model to walk the runway in a Prada fashion show in over a decade.

A source told The Sun On Sunday newspaper: "They have grown steadily close. But they have been keeping their relationship very quiet. A

  • Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was embroiled in a controversial scandal after embarrassing photos of his night with a woman were leaked to British tabloids over the weekend.

Details of his tryst with American model Celia Kay, 26, at Arsenal's team hotel in Canary Wharf, London, on 2 February were published all over The Sun and the French press are already up in arms about it.

And the model in question has now threatened to sue any publication or person that labels her an "escort".

"I am not, have never been and will never be an escort. Go ahead and say it, but anyone who does will be accountable to my lawyers," declared Kay on Twitter.

Giroud, who married his wife Jennifer (seen above at a tennis game) in 2011, has notoriously tried to keep his private life under wraps, but this scandal has appeared to do the complete opposite.

After the player issued an apology saying he would now have to "fight for my family and for my club, for their forgiveness," it was revealed that he would

  • His squad may be enjoying a great run of form after a 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal and an impressive comeback win over Fulham, but Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers now has to deal with the spotlight on his own personal life.

The 41-year-old coach reportedly bought a bachelor pad for a whopping £1.2 million ($2.51 million) and has started living away from his family and two children, Anton, 20, and daughter Mischa, 17.

According to a report in The Daily Mail today, Rodgers left his wife, Susan (seen above) for a 31-year-old former employee of Liverpool earlier this year.

The woman in question is Charlotte Hind, who has been spotted several times at Rodgers' new luxury home located in an upmarket suburb of the city.

Football clubs do not permit employees to have relations with one another, but Hind is believed to have left the office to pursue her relationship with Rodgers.

  • That unmistakable Afro and signature grin make Brazil and Chelsea player David Luiz one of the friendliest faces in English football today.

In fact, the 26-year-old has never once refused an autograph or photo request, and this obliging spirit has made him one of the club’s top ambassadors for children.

Luiz is known for getting along well with kids, through his jokes and humorous facial expressions.

“Children are the most honest and pure people in the world. They say things to me that make me disappointed, but are true," said Luiz in an exclusive interview with Yahoo Singapore.

"They say things like 'thanks for the photo, but I don’t like you – I like another player'. It’s hilarious and I think it’s wonderful. It makes me happy to hear that!”

But Luiz does have fans from all over the world -- he affectionately calls them "geezers", after his favourite English word -- who absolutely adore his joy for the game and his grounded persona.

  • Juan Mata spotted househunting in Manchester last week.

It has been a whirlwind few weeks for Man United's biggest buy of the winter transfer window, Juan Mata.

His high-profile £37 million (S$76.5 million) move from Chelsea to Man United was sealed on January 23, and he was spotted house hunting in the suburbs of Manchester, last week.

Mata will be living near his new teammates as the neighbourhood in Cheshire boasts the likes of Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Nani, Patrice Evra and Ashley Young as residents.

And although Mata appears to be looking for a house in the up-market area, the 25-year-old midfielder has said in previous interviews that he was an ordinary man who preferred to live a normal life.

"I’ve never thought about (tabloids) and I’m not worried about that. I try to live a normal life and to not do anything stupid, and that’s it. There’s nothing about my life that will fill newspapers," he said.

So it was no wonder Mata did not mind the fact that the papparazzi had already assumed the blonde real estate agent in the photos to

  • The wife of Man United striker Wayne Rooney, Coleen, has been on the receiving end of online abuse on Twitter for showing off her "free gifts".

The "WAG" has been lambasted by her followers for accepting freebies from designers and excessively "parading" them online, despite being married to a millionaire footballer and being well able to afford the items.

Coleen has been known to put up photos of herself in designer clothes and customised shoes while toting expensive luxury bags.

However, last week seemed to be the final straw after the 28-year-old received another designer piece from fashion designer Melissa Odabash.

"Thank you @melissaodabash for my gorgeous bikinis!! I absolutely love them!! x," she wrote on Twitter.

Seconds later, the abuse began with frustrated fans lashing out at Coleen's actions.

"Millionaire husband and still accepting freebies, do you not feel bad when there’s people who can’t pay their gas bill?" wrote an angry fan in retaliation.

    Others criticised Coleen's
