Red card while on stretcher for Ethiopia goalkeeper’s horror tackle

Ethiopia goalkeeper Jamel Tassew made an impression at the African Cup of Nations for all the wrong reasons after a horror tackle saw him sent off after just 35 minutes.

The stopper, representing his nation in their first game in the finals since 1982, charged headlong out of his penalty area in a bid to block Zambia’s Chisamba Lungu from running through on goal.

However, his timing was well off, and in his desperation to block the ball he ended up kung-fu kicking his opponent in the stomach and bringing him to the ground.

Both were hurt, though it was the goalkeeper himself who came off worse.

He could not continue, but as he was being stretchered off the referee issued him a red card – one which he could have few complaints about.

That looked to spell disaster for Ethiopia – particularly when the defending champions took the lead soon after.

But they levelled in a spirited second-half fightback and held on for a draw.
