NEW ORLEANS - A new clubhouse at the Joseph Batholomew Golf Course is the latest milestone for the Pontchartrain Park neighborhood.
After the golf course was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the city rebuilt it and reopened it in 2011. A temporary clubhouse has been in use since the course reopened.
On Wednesday morning, a groundbreaking for the new structure was held at the location of the pre-Katrina clubhouse. The old clubhouse was demolished in May to make room for the $4 million building.
The 8,500 square foot facility will include a community meeting space and restaurant.
It is intended to be used for more than golf - it will be available as a place to hold weddings and parties.
Officials said it's another step to making the park even better than it was before Katrina.
"For anybody that is looking to move into the city of New Orleans, and you wanted a great neighborhood to come in, and you think about the housing stock that's in this area and the amenities that are here - a first-rate golf course, a first-rate clubhouse, a senior center, tennis courts, a baseball facility and immediately adjacent to one of the great historically black colleges and universities - there is a reason why Pontchartrain Park is the anchor for the city of New Orleans," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.
The clubhouse is expected to open in the spring of 2014.
