Tianwei Feng Biography
Ranked as high as No. 2 in the world as recently as January 2011, Feng has seen her form dip in recent months to drop out of the top five for the first time since last summer. It has worried her fans in Singapore, where she became a star after helping the country earn silver in the team event at the Beijing Games, marking the first Olympic medal for the nation in 48 years. Feng also reached the quarterfinals of the singles event, losing to eventual gold medalist Zhang Yining of China. Since then, she's advanced to the quarterfinals of the world championships in 2009 and '11 with losses to Chinese players both times. She is seemingly poised to take advantage of new ITTF restrictions that limit two players from each country in Olympic singles; only two Chinese representatives will be in the field after seven were quarterfinalists at last year’s worlds. Feng, however, suffered shocking first-round losses in tournaments in Qatar and Kuwait earlier this year and her woes have caused Singapore to drop to No. 3 in the world rankings behind China and Japan.
