Laszlo Cseh Biography

Cseh made his Olympic debut in 2004 despite breaking a bone in his foot just weeks before the Games, still managing to win bronze in the 400-meter individual medley. He also finish fourth in the 200 IM in Athens. It was the Beijing Games, however, where he really made his mark, winning silver medals in the 200 and 400 IM events, as well as the 200 butterfly. In each race, he was kept from gold by Michael Phelps. Expected to build on that success at the 2009 world championships, Cseh instead suffered another setback when he was hospitalized with a stomach virus. He was scratched from one event, but returned to win silver in the 200 and bronze in the 400 IM. Cseh's father, who shares the same name, swam in the 1968 and '72 Olympics, and was the first Hungarian to break the one-minute barrier in the 100 backstroke.
