Alicia Coutts Biography

Coutts made her Olympic debut in 2008, finishing fifth in the 200 meter individual medley final. Her greatest achievement, however, came at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where, as a relative unknown, she won individual gold medals in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley, as well as on the 4x100 freestyle and medley relay teams. One year later, Coutts won a pair of silvers in the 100m butterfly and 200m medley at the world championships, and she swam the butterfly leg of the medley relay to capture a bronze. At the 2012 national championships, Coutts won the 100m butterfly and placed second in the 200 IM to secure berths in those Olympic events. She dealt with a bout of glandular fever early in her career and had surgery to repair intussusceptions in 2007. Coutts underwent further abdominal surgery in 2009 after suffering complications from the original operation, but quickly bounced back with her Commonwealth Games success.
