Andoni Zubizarreta insists new Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova played a big role in the club's recent successes, having assisted Pep Guardiola for the past four years.

The former assistant takes over in the Blaugrana hotseat following the 41-year-old’s decision to step down from his role at Camp Nou.

Despite inevitable comparisions between the new man and his predecessor, the sporting director reminded the press of the part played by Vilanova during the Catalan club’s trophy sweep.

"The challenge of coaching Barcelona takes much work and he knows this, he has been on the same bench as Guardiola,” The retired Spain goalkeeper told AS.

“The successes to date are both of theirs. Tito knows that the most important thing now is to train to Barcelona."

Vilanova will be charged with leading Barcelona back to glory in both La Liga and the Champions League after they failed on both fronts in 2011-12.
