Jermain Defoe scored five goals, including a seven-minute hat trick, to match a Premier League record in powering Tottenham to a 9-1 rout of Wigan on Sunday.

Defoe equaled the mark set by Newcastle's Alan Shearer in 1999 and Manchester United's Andy Cole in 1995.

Tottenham matched Man United's league record for most goals in a game. United defeated Ipswich 9-0 in 1995, the game in which Cole had his five goals.

After Peter Crouch opened the scoring in the ninth minute for the Spurs at home, Defoe took struck with three goals between the 51st and 58th minutes. Aaron Lennon made it 5-0 and Defoe netted again in the 69th and 87th. Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland scored an own-goal and Niko Kranjcar added another in the final minute.

Paul Scharner replied for Wigan when Spurs were three goals up, and the Austrian appeared to control the ball with his hands before scoring.

Tottenham is tied with Arsenal for third place behind Chelsea and Manchester United. Chelsea outplayed Wolves 4-0 to stay five points ahead in first place. Man United beat Everton 3-0 to take second place from Arsenal, which lost 1-0 at Sunderland. Blackburn ended a run of five straight away defeats with a 2-0 victory at Bolton.
