China proved too strong for Singapore as they beat the local women’s team 3-1 to win the Asian Table Tennis Championships in Macau on Saturday, reported the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU).
Even without the services of world No. 1 Ding Ning, China had little trouble seeing off the challenge of the Singapore paddlers.
World third seed Guo Yan got the ball rolling for China with an opening 11-8, 12-10, 11-7 win over Singapore's Feng Tian Wei before Guo Yue stretched China’s lead with victory over Li Jiawei (11-4, 6-11, 11-4, 13-11).
But 22-year-old Yu Mengyu gave Singapore a glimpse of hope when she notched an unlikely 3-2 win over world No. 2 Liu Shiwen.
That proved to be the Republic’s only bright spot of the day as Guo Yue sealed the Asian team title for China with a 3-1 win over world fifth seed Feng Tianwei.
Despite the defeat, Singapore Table Tennis Association president Lee Bee Wah remains proud of her team’s efforts and singled out world no.35 Yu for special praise.
“To beat China the second time is near impossible. What we asked for is for the team to give their best which they did,” she said on her Facebook wall.
“I am particularly impressed by Yu Mengyue who came from two games down to defeat Liu Shiwen. I just hope that the team continue to work hard and give their best in the coming world championship and Olympics,” she added.
