Former Adelaide United player Sergio Van Dijk officially joined Indonesia Super League side Persib Bandung on Monday evening, mere hours after he took his oath to become an Indonesian citizen.
The 30-year-old, who was born in Assen, Netherlands, signed a two-year contract with the West Java club and will don the number 10 jersey.
Speaking during a press conference, Van Dijk said that he hopes that his arrival will propel the Bandung Tigers to a higher status in the country and that he will be able to represent the Indonesia national team.
“I am happy to be in Persib, a big club in Indonesia with good players and massive support from its fans group, the Bobotoh. I come here to try and help Persib win the league title,” he revealed.
“If all goes well, hopefully I am able to play for Indonesia one day.”
Team manager H.Umuh Muchtar also hopes that the former A-league top scorer will be able to don the red and white jersey soon.
“Every player will surely be proud to play for the national team and Persib will also feel the same (if Van Dijk represent Indonesia)," he said.
Van Dijk also explained that he is in good physical condition and feels that he won’t have any problem adapting to his new environment.
“I feel fit as I had been regularly training in Australia since the summer and there is no problem with my body. I only left with adapting myself to the surrounding and my new teammates in the training session," he explained.
“You will see top-quality performances from me once I have settled in.”
