The Singapore U16s became the first side in the competition to progress to the semi-final stage after holding out against a determined Porto U16 side, makin their tournament debut.

“I think that Porto is the best team in the tournament," said Cubs coach Dejan Gluscevic.

"I'm grateful that we can play different kinds of opponents.

Gluscevic also touched on the mentality of his players and the drive behind their success so far.

“We can only succeed only if we play positively," added the former Tanjong Pagar player.

"It’s also a matter of strategy and tactics. We have played in international games before and we learn from our mistakes. We are now playing more as a team.

When asked on his decision to replace Adam Swandi as captain, he replied: “Our captains are leaders in the team and we change them every game as I want to develop and encourage leadership in the squad.”

“Today we needed to be strong in our defence and our captain contributed to a great performance by the team.”

Amirul Adli who wore the armband for the night spoke of how his team had given their best in the game.

“I am very happy for the team as we played a very prestigious club," said Amirul.

"It was a good fight and we are very happy with the results as we pushed ourselves to the limit during the game.”

Although they could only play out a goalless draw, Porto coach Antonio Folha was also pleased with the point that his team had earned in the game.

“It was a very competitive match between teams that gave their most with both teams wanting to win,” said Folha.

“Our team is here to learn and grow and I am happy with their performance.

“We’re not used to this kind of humidity but we played well and remain faithful to our team philosophy.”

Porto FC will carry on their campaign against Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday evening while the Cubs will wait for their semi-final fixture on Friday.
