Magpies managing director Derek Llambias is believed to have recently travelled to Holland in order to make an offer of £9.6 million for the forward.

However, the Dutch club have rejected the proposed deal after choosing to stand firm on their valuation of over £12m for the Netherlands international.

Consequently, Steve McClaren appears set to retain the services of one of his star performers whilst Newcastle turn their attentions towards other targets.

One such target is understood to be De Jong’s Brazilian team-mate Douglas Franco Teixeira, but the defender is required to remain in Holland until August 24 in order to qualify for his passport meaning Newcastle must wait to make a move.
