Despite having a not-too-impressive CV - playing for a number of top Dutch clubs (Ajax, Twente, Feyenoord) and having six international caps, Michael Mols is still happy at how his career panned out.
“I enjoyed everything in my career. There’s always a desire to want more, but I’m happy with what I’ve achieved!” the Dutchman told Goal.com Singapore at the Singapore Indian Development Association [SINDA] yesterday afternoon.
The 41-year-old, who retired four years ago and has been leading a low-profile since, was here for the first time as part of the EPL Legends All-Star team which will participate in the upcoming EPL Masters Football Cup.
“So far, mostly it’s all about enjoying life for me. I am able to do what I couldn’t do while playing football – travelling around, visit friends and having more family time," said Mols.
"I have a 13-year-old son who plays on Saturday with his team, but I often could not watch due to training. Now I’ve more time to watch him play and watch him grow up."
As such, it would be a big surprise to see Mols taking on any coaching job in the near future.
“I’m still deciding on what to do and there’s no rush. I don’t want to go into football though, it’s too hectic and there’s too much pressure," claims Mols.
"I don’t want go into coaching. If you see the coaches now, they’re all bald, grey and look very old!”
In his almost 20-year-long football career, the five years he spent with Glasgow Rangers held the fondest memories for him. He was part of a team that were Scottish champions twice and won two other cups, despite him missing two of those five years due to injury.
“The best time of my career was at Rangers, not only football-wise, but more about the life in Scotland in general. The respect and passion there with the supportive people was really good,” he reflected.
The sentimentalist in him hopes that the Scotland national team can make it to the 2014 World Cup after a disastrous Euro 2012 outing.
“Well, that was terrible! At least now they’re doing well for the qualification for Brazil and I’m keeping my fingers crossed on whether they will go through,” he concluded.
