Ferdinand signs one-year Man United contract

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Manchester United centre back Rio Ferdinand signed a one-year contract on Thursday to stay with the Premier League champions for a 12th season. The 34-year-old would have been out of contract this summer after helping his club to a 20th league title but will now be part of new manager David Moyes's set-up following the retirement of Alex Ferguson. "I am delighted to have signed a new contract," Ferdinand said in a statement. ...

Boss who beats Ferguson in longevity stakes retires

By Sonia Oxley MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - England's longest-serving football manager is retiring aged 71 after overseeing several trophy-laden decades at the club he loves - but he is not called Alex Ferguson. Just days after the footballing world watched Ferguson call time on his managerial career, Jimmy Davies will step aside from his post at amateur club Waterloo Dock after a 50-year stint that makes the former Manchester United boss's 26 years look short. ...

Raonic sees a gain from training in Spain

By Iain Rogers MADRID (Reuters) - Milos Raonic would probably not feature on most people's list of potential French Open champions but the two-metre Canadian with the booming serve has been working hard on his clay game in Spain and has the potential to cause an upset. The Montenegro-born 22-year-old, who will make his third appearance at Roland Garros next week, joined up with Spanish coach Galo Blanco at his 4Slam Tennis academy in Barcelona in November 2010 and believes Blanco's influence

The opening weekend of the season in England and Spain was predictably tough with some shock results which left punters feeling under the weather.

Real Madrid failed to justify 2/7 (1.29) short-price favouritism and could only draw 1-1 with Valencia. Manchester United went down to a rare defeat at Goodison Park and even big spenders Paris Saint-Germain at 4/6 (1.67) in France could only muster a 0-0 draw at Ajaccio last weekend.

As I said last week, it is important to keep your stakes low in the first few weeks of the season. There are many unknowns involved in the first few weeks so it makes speculating that more difficult.

I was slightly down last week but have left that behind with two successful selections so far this week, advised at 16/10 (2.60) and evens (2.0) respectively, which has put me back in profit. I expect that to continue this weekend.

Ante-post selections in Italy and Germany

Serie A and the Bundesliga kick off this weekend and I have been scanning the markets with Bet365 for some strong ante-post selections.

With AC Milan weakened with the departure of Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic plus Juventus having managerial issues, it could be left open for a surprise package to win the Scudetto this season.

Zdenek Zeman has returned to the Italian capital with Roma and he is a coach totally committed to attacking football and more importantly, winning football. He has recruited well including the improved Michael Bradley, Mattia Destro and Italy international Federico Balzaretti.

They are an interesting bet at 12/1 (13.0) to be champions but if you think the title is out of reach, then can back them to finish in the top 3 at 9/4 (3.25) with Bet365. In Germany, Borussia Monchengladbach can repeat their wonderful season in 2011-12 by finishing in the top 4 in the Bundesliga.

They may have lost some players but have replaced them well with Luuk De Jong and Swiss talent Granit Xhaka both notable acquisitions. Bet365 gives you the option of betting on a team to finish in the top 4 and they are an attractive 16/5 (4.20) to do so.

Weekend selections

I am going to focus on the goals markets this weekend. Fulham are developing into a very attractive team under Martin Jol and they can take advantage of some defensive absentees for Manchester United by scoring at Old Trafford.

Their confidence will be sky high after beating Norwich City 5-0 in the opening match and both teams to score at evens (2.0) with Bet365 is the bet to be on.

Newcastle United can score at Stamford Bridge and I will make a move against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga by backing their opponents Real Betis to score over 1.5 goals.

Rayo are poor travellers and are one of the favourites for the drop. This combination pays around 19/10 (2.90) with Bet365.
