New MLS club faces challenge to make mark in New York

By Simon Evans MIAMI (Reuters) - For a brief but dazzling spell in the 1970s, New Yorkers fell in love with soccer as Pele and the Cosmos showcased the world's most popular game in a city long dominated by baseball and American football. Pulis leaves Stoke after seven years in charge

LONDON (Reuters) - Stoke City and manager Tony Pulis parted company by mutual agreement on Tuesday after seven years in which he established the Potteries outfit back in the top flight of English soccer. Having steered Stoke to the Premier League in 2008, two years after returning for a second spell at the helm, Pulis has kept them safe amongst the elite and took them to the FA Cup final in 2010-11 when they lost to Manchester City. However, Stoke's abrasive style of football and this season's

The 24-year-old Liverpool striker scored seven goals in 24 Premier League matches during his season-long loan spell with West Ham, despite suffering a series of injuries

Queens Park Rangers have signed out-of-contract Blackburn Rovers winger Junior Hoilett on a four-year deal, the Premier League team confirmed on Friday.

The 22-year-old Canadian has chosen to continue his career at Loftus Road where he becomes the club's seventh summer signing after Rob Green, Ryan Nelsen, Fabio da Silva, Ji-Sung Park, Samba Diakite and Andy Johnson.

"Junior's a player of top quality who can make things happen, both on his own and as a team player," QPR manager Mark Hughes told the club's official website.

"Junior is a player I know very well. He was just a young boy trying to make his way in the game when I had him at Blackburn," Hughes said.

"It was difficult for him then because of work permit issues, but I had him training with the first team very early on because his talent was there for all to see.

"We knew then he was going to have a great future and he's showed that talent over the last few seasons at Ewood Park.

"He's a player that will enhance what we've got in the group and I'm delighted he's chosen to come to us."

Hoilett fired seven goals in a struggling Blackburn team that was relegated from the Premier League last season.

He believes QPR, who narrowly escaped relegation themselves last season, are a club heading in the right direction.

"The manager and the owners have huge ambitions to achieve things here and this is the perfect place for me to further my career," he said.
