By Simon Evans MIAMI (Reuters) - For a brief but dazzling spell in the 1970s, New Yorkers fell in love with soccer as Pele and the Cosmos showcased the world's most popular game in a city long dominated by baseball and American football. Now Major League Soccer hopes that a new team, called the New York City Football Club and formed by an alliance of English Premier League club Manchester City and baseball's grandest club the New York Yankees, can not only recapture that excitement but this

Pulis leaves Stoke after seven years in charge

LONDON (Reuters) - Stoke City and manager Tony Pulis parted company by mutual agreement on Tuesday after seven years in which he established the Potteries outfit back in the top flight of English soccer. Having steered Stoke to the Premier League in 2008, two years after returning for a second spell at the helm, Pulis has kept them safe amongst the elite and took them to the FA Cup final in 2010-11 when they lost to Manchester City. However, Stoke's abrasive style of football and this season's

Beckham junior trains with QPR academy

LONDON (Reuters) - David Beckham's eldest son Brooklyn has trained at the junior academy of London club Queens Park Rangers and bookmakers are already offering short odds that the 14-year-old will emulate his father by playing for England. QPR said on Twitter that he was training with them but had not officially joined their academy. Beckham senior, who began his career by joining Manchester United's academy also at the age of 14, retired from the game last week after helping Paris St Germain

Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini has revealed that he advised Toffees manager David Moyes on the club's latest signing, Kevin Mirallas.

The two are international team-mates for Belgium and, having played together for several years, the Scot decided to seek his midfielder's opinion before making his move.

The 24-year-old was signed by the Goodison Park club ahead of their opening game of the season at home to Manchester United, but the move took place after the registration deadline for Monday's night's game, so instead he will be paraded in front of the fans rather than challenging Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic for a starting spot.

6/1 William Hill offer 6/1 for Everton to beat Manchester United and Nikica Jelavic to score anytime

"Last week or two weeks ago he [Moyes] asked me what I thought about him," Fellaini told the club's official website.

"I told him he was a good player, a good dribbler, he's quick, a good finisher and I said I hoped he could come here because he could help the team.

"He can keep the ball, take people on, cross the ball, score goals, so I think he will be good for the team.

"He's a quick player, with good technique, good dribbling ability, last year he was top scorer [for Olympiakos] and I think he is a player who will excite the fans. I hope so."

As well helping his manager during the transfer, Fellaini was also in contact with Mirallas, and advised him that a move to Goodison Park would be a good move for his career.

"I said welcome to the Premier League because it is difficult to get a move to the Premier League," Fellaini added. "I told him to enjoy it because it is a special league.

"I think it's good for Everton because he's a good player and we need more players for the squad. I hope he scores a lot of goals for Everton and gets some assists too.

“He's clever, he's a good guy and I think the team will take him into the group quickly. He will be happy here."
