MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Manchester United centre back Rio Ferdinand signed a one-year contract on Thursday to stay with the Premier League champions for a 12th season. The 34-year-old would have been out of contract this summer after helping his club to a 20th league title but will now be part of new manager David Moyes's set-up following the retirement of Alex Ferguson. "I am delighted to have signed a new contract," Ferdinand said in a statement. ...

Boss who beats Ferguson in longevity stakes retires

By Sonia Oxley MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - England's longest-serving football manager is retiring aged 71 after overseeing several trophy-laden decades at the club he loves - but he is not called Alex Ferguson. Just days after the footballing world watched Ferguson call time on his managerial career, Jimmy Davies will step aside from his post at amateur club Waterloo Dock after a 50-year stint that makes the former Manchester United boss's 26 years look short. ...

Raonic sees a gain from training in Spain

By Iain Rogers MADRID (Reuters) - Milos Raonic would probably not feature on most people's list of potential French Open champions but the two-metre Canadian with the booming serve has been working hard on his clay game in Spain and has the potential to cause an upset. The Montenegro-born 22-year-old, who will make his third appearance at Roland Garros next week, joined up with Spanish coach Galo Blanco at his 4Slam Tennis academy in Barcelona in November 2010 and believes Blanco's influence

Nadal back in old routine and looking invincible

By Martyn Herman LONDON (Reuters) - Watching Rafa Nadal churn his way through the claycourt season over the past few weeks, it seems nothing much has changed since his French Open triumph a year ago despite a lengthy injury layoff. Titles in Barcelona, Madrid and Rome, where he dropped only three sets in the process, mean the 26-year-old is overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy for an eighth time at Roland Garros when play gets underway in Paris on Sunday. ...

Real Madrid centre-back Raul Albiol believes Iker Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world and should be given the Ballon d'Or for his efforts for both club and country.

The former Valencia player spoke of his admiration for Spain's No.1 and believes a shot-stopper of his calibre deserves the accolade for being top of his game for so long.

Casillas conceded twice in El Clasico but the defender insists there was little he could do about Lionel Messi's strikes while adding the 31-year-old has saved Los Blancos numerous times in the past.

"Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world, he's the best player you could ask for in your team," Albiol said.

"The other day, those two goals were really difficult for him. The first one was only a few metres away and the second was an incredible free-kick.

"He's the best in the world and he's saved us many times. I would put Casillas on the list of candidates for the Ballon d'Or. He's won the Liga and the European Championship this year and I think he was key for Real Madrid.

"It's unusual for a goalkeeper to win it but for me he's on the list."

Albiol was also supportive of fellow Spaniard Juan Mata, and believes the Chelsea star will be given a chance for Spain at some point in the future, despite difficult circumstances.

He added: "The coach makes the call and it's tricky to get on the list. He's a very good player and I'm sure he'll have the opportunity to come back to the Spain team."
