Diego Maradona's UAE club Al Wasl have taken the unique step of requesting their goalkeeper Majed Nasser be banned for the entire season after his red card in their Gulf Clubs Championship final defeat to Al Muharraq.

The goalkeeper was sent off in the 10th minute of the 3-1 loss, for a headbutt which Al Wasl have labelled a "disgraceful action".

After the defeat, Maradona fumed at the sending off of Nasser, who was embroiled in controversy earlier this year after slapping Al Ahli coach Quique Sanchez Flores, earning a 17-game ban, before retiring in protest at the decision.

However, in the latest episode Al Wasl's Board of Directors slammed Nasser's "detrimental" action and request a season-long ban.

“The reckless and irresponsible act of the goalkeeper shattered the club’s dream of winning the title,” an Al Wasl statement read. “It had a negative effect on the outcome of the game and turned victory, which looked certain, into defeat.”
