Al Wasl have confirmed they have replaced Diego Maradona with former Senegal and UAE national team coach Bruno Metsu on a two-year deal.

The 58-year-old Frenchman, who famously guided Senegal to a 2002 World Cup win over France, was confirmed as Maradona's successor on Tuesday evening following Al Wasl's trophyless 2011-12 season.

"Al Wasl Football Company announces the official appointment of Bruno Metsu as Head Coach of Al Wasl as a replacement for Diego Maradona," Al Wasl wrote in a statement on Twitter.

"More details will be revealed in the press conference that will be held in the coming days to officially unveil coach Metsu."

The appointment sees Metsu return to UAE, having guided the national team to the 2007 Gulf Cup of Nations before resigning in September 2008. Metsu also took UAE club Al Ain to Asian Champions League glory in 2003 as well as the 2003-04 and 2004-05 domestic titles.

Metsu has spent the past four years working in Qatar, most recently with Al Gharafa who sacked him in March.

Maradona was dismissed by Al Wasl last week following a disappointing first season of his two-year deal with the Dubai club, where they finished down in eighth in the 12-team UAE Pro-League.
