74 arrested in Singapore as part of Interpol's Operation Soccer Gambling

An Asia-wide Interpol operation relating to illegal football gambling resulted in 300 arrests and over US$780,000 being seized.

The two-month operation, held jointly with local police forces in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore saw over 200 raids on gambling dens that were believed to be handling approximately US$85 million in illegal bets.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) made 74 arrests on their part. More than S$78,000 in cash, as well as electronic and communication devices like moblie phones and computers were seized as well.

"These series of operations show our resolve to clamp down on illegal gambling activities," said 
Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Hoong Wee Teck to Today.

"We will come down hard on subjects, regardless of whether they are individuals betting illegally or are part of a syndicate collecting illegal bets. We will also continue to work closely with Interpol in combating such illicit activities"

The New Paper also reported earlier today that two men who were arrested for attempting to fix a Malaysian Super League match between LionsXII and Sarawak FA have gone missing.

Thanasegar S. Sinnaiah, 38, and referee Shokri Nor were initially let off on a bail of $50,000 each. Both men are now reportedly uncontactable.
