Alexandar Duric left out of Singapore squad

Aleksandar Duric has been left out of the Singapore squad for their upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup third-round qualifier against Iraq on 29 February.

Coach Radojko Avramovic announced his 25-man provisional squad on Wednesday, with the biggest surprise being the absence of Duric's name on the list.

The 41-year-old has been a regular fixture in the Lions squad since making his debut in 2007.

Another surprising move by the Avramovic came in the form of Baihakki Khaizan, who received his first call-up for over a year.

The 28-year-old was dropped from the squad following the Lions' dismal Suzuki Cup campaign in December 2010, where they were knocked out in the group stage.

But Baihakki, who scored the LionsXII's first goal in the Malaysian Super League season, has impressed with his performances at the heart of LionsXII defence and is rewarded with a call-up.

Also among the provisional squad list are four uncapped players.

LionsXII defender Muhammad Shakir Bin Hamzah and midfielder Muhammad Yasir Bin Hanapi are joined by Balestier Khalsa striker Patrick Brian Paranjody and goalkeeper Sim Wei Zhi Joey.

Singapore will play a friendly against Azerbaijan on 24 February as preparation for their 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Iraq five days later.

    Singapore squad:

Goalkeepers: Izwan Mahbud, Hassan Sunny, Sim Wei Zhi Joey, Hyrulnizam Juma'at

Defenders: Bennett Daniel Mark, Baihakki Khaizan, Juma'at Jantan, Shaiful Esah, Safuwan Baharudin, Shakir Hamzah, Delwinder Singh

Midfielders: Shahril Ishak, Shi Jiayi, Firdaus Idros, Hariss Harun, Isa Halim, Yasir Hanapi, Shahdan Sulaiman, Ruzaini Zainal, Mustafic Fahrudin

Strikers: Qiu Li, Agu Casmir, Khairul Nizam, Fazrul Nawaz, Patrick Brian Paranjody

I salute Duric for having serving Singapore football so well. He has been a great goal poacher, motivator and role model. Words are not enough for me to express how I marveled at your football skills and your gentleman demeanour. I am certain you acn serve Singapore football in another capacity; as a strikers' coach, coach for age-group football. FAS, the ball is in your hand. Don't lose him. Cheers Duric........................

Farewell Duric. Thnks for yr contribution.
I believe the team will fair much better now since the youngsters have had experience in the MSL. They should be more aggressive and focus. Nevermind the critics, Lets enjoy football and support our countrymen. They should call up Sufian too. Very aggressive player plus he's very hardworking. I have always believe in Singapore Football and will always believe. Win Lose or Draw you'll have us Singaporeans supporting you.

Thank you Duric. You have given yeoman's service to Singapore soccer. Hope you can find a coaching job to train dashing never-say-die strikers like you. Totally missing in the 'armoury' of current potentials seen.

Thanks Duric for all your contribution but it's time to hang up your boots and move into a management position. Let youngsters get out onto the pitch and showcase their talents. Only this way will Singapore's soccer develop.
